Russia’s Minister of Emergency Situations Vladimir Puchkov went down to inspect the 'Northern' coal mine in Komi Republic, Friday, after a rock-burst killed four miners and locked 26 other underground on Thursday.
Puchkov, alongside the Republic’s Interim Governor Sergei Gaplikov, both strapped on breathing equipment to inspect the stricken ‘Northern’ mine before descending into the accident area.
The local Emergencies Ministry reported that 110 people were down the shaft at the time of the incident and 79 were brought to the surface, four of whom were injured.
The incident occurred when the miners were working 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) below the surface of the remote "Northern" mine in Vorkuta, about 2,000 kilometres (1240 miles) north east of Moscow.
Emergency teams established contact with those stranded underground and after gas concentration levels were measured, began the operation in the mine.
Earlier in the day, dozens of rescuers flew from Kemerovo and Novokuznetsk to bolster what Puchkov has described as life-threatening conditions.
