"We have been working closely with Saudi Arabia on the question of the Syrian crisis for more than one year," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said alongside his Saudi counterpart Adel Al-Jubeir in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi, Sunday. Lavrov confirmed that the primary goal shared by both Russia and Saudi Arabia is "to avoid the success of the terrorist Caliphate in Syria," adding that "our military operation in Syria is against the Islamic state, Jabhat Al Nusra and other terrorist groups." The Russian FM stated that the second goal in relation to Syria "is that national reconciliation prevails, that all Syrian people, regardless of their nationality and confession, feel themselves as masters of their own country." The meeting follows Saudi Arabia alongside the Gulf Cooperation Council publicly condemning Moscow's military intervention into Syria in comments made in late September.
