The kebab shop 'Kiez Doner' which was the site of an anti-Semitic attack in the German city of Halle reopened on Saturday, 39 days after the incident.
The opening saw Saxony-Anhalt Minister President Reiner Haseloff in attendance along with several locals who were invited for a free meal symbolising that the "time to grieve is over now [in the Islamic faith]" according to owner Izzet Cagac. Cagac also gifted the restaurant to his employees Rifat and Ismet Tekin, who were working during the attack.
Speaking to reporters, Haseloff added, "I just wish that we are not being destabilised. We want to move forward and this bistro is part of this.''
The Halle attack occurred on October 9 2019. Two people were killed after a man opened fire near a synagogue where the Jewish community was observing the holiday of Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. One woman was shot dead outside the synagogue, near a Jewish cemetery, and one man was killed in 'Kiez Doner.'
A 27-year-old male named Stephan B. has been arrested and confessed to the attack. The shooting appears to have been motivated by "extreme far-right and anti-Semitic" views, according to German reports. The suspect live-streamed the attack on Twitch, an online video streaming platform, before being arrested.
