Douglas Hughes, a political activist that landed a gyrocopter in the grounds of the US Capitol building two years ago, related his experience since going over the fence from his home in Tampa, Florida on Tuesday.
Hughes explained that on the day of the landing, there were 535 letters on board, which were addressed to each member of Congress. "I was demanding an end to corruption and I was warning the members of Congress that the people of the country are aware and they will not tolerate the level of corruption we are living under," he explained.
"I got fired from work. I get sent to prison for four months, I was in litigation for almost a year before I went to prison. But the most signficant change is that now I am working with the leaders of the movement to get the money out of politics here in the country."
Despite the jail time, the former postman said that he didn't regret anything, "and I am not yet satisfied with the results. But, I am not done yet."
Although Hughes is unable to vote or go into state politics because of his conviction, he's still hopeful about his future political career; "The one thing that I can do is to run for federal office."
Hughes landed his gyrocopter in front of US Capitol building on April 15, 2015, and was immediately arrested and sentenced to four months in prison. His stunt was an attempt to draw attention to the Supreme Court's 2012 decision in the Citizens United case, supporting the lack of regulation on companies and private donors to US political parties.
