Russian President Vladimir Putin met with the leader of the New Democracy party, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in Athens in the early hours of Saturday morning.
During the meeting, Putin expressed his hope that the Greek opposition would "support our current initiatives and will in every way promote the development of Russian-Greek relations."
In response, Mitsotakis said: "Our countries have close ties based on common traditions, common religion and common geographic location," before adding: "I think it is important that in the current circumstances there is cross-party agreement on the fact that relations with Russia can be further enhanced." The opposition leader also noted that there is "great interest in investments from Russia to Greece."
Putin arrived in Athens on Friday to hold bilateral talks with Greek Prime Minister Alexei Tsipras. On Saturday, the Russian president is scheduled to visit Mount Athos to mark the 1,000-year presence of Russian Orthodox monks before meeting with Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos in Karyes.
