Pro-government troops loyal to ousted Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi along with their international allies recaptured the Bab el-Mandeb Strait from Houthi fighters, Friday. The strait is strategically important, as it links the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, serving as the main thoroughfare for ships heading to Europe and the United States. The Saudi-led coalition, which seeks to restore the government of Hadi and displace the Houthi rebels, includes eight other Arab states and is receiving logistical support from the United States, Britain and France. Some 2,600 civilians have died in the last six months, according to UN figures. A further 300,000 civilians have been internally displaced because of the airstrikes, with 27,000 Yemeni residents forced to flee the country.
