India: At least 9 killed in building collapse

Nine people were killed in a house collapse in the Indian city of Thane, in Mumbai region, Wednesday. Eleven injured residents were rescued, the National Disaster Response Force reported. The three-storey building is suspected to have collapsed as a consequence of heavy rains late on Tuesday. Eighteen of the 27 tenements were crushed as a consequence. Civic authorities claim they issued eviction notices due to the building being deemed unsafe. Housing collapses have occurred with relative frequency in India due to the influx of job seekers from rural areas creating a huge demand for housing, leading many houses to be built outside of the law and with haste.
