Russia: Former Economy Minister Aleksei Ulyukayev placed under house arrest

The former Economic Development Minister of Russia Aleksei Ulyukayev was placed under house arrest at Moscow Basmanni District Court, on Tuesday, due to the criminal charge that he accepted a $2 million (€1.86 million) bribe. Ulyukaev denies any wrongdoing.
At the hearing to determine whether Ulyukayev is to receive bail or not, his lawyer said that his arrest was a provocation against state officials. The minister was also dismissed from his post by presidential decree that same day due to a loss of confidence.
Ulyukayev was arrested on Monday night by the officers of the Investigative Committee as he is suspected in of accepting a $2 million bribe (€1,863,559). According to the investigators, he received the money after his Ministry had approved the deal on Rosneft's takeover of a major regional company oil company Bashneft. As a result, Rosneft could acquire the state's stake in Bashneft.
The detention makes Ulyukayev the highest-ranking Russian official taken into custody since the attempted coup 1991.
