Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan cast his vote in Istanbul after polling stations across the country opened for the parliamentary elections, Sunday morning. Erdogan arrived amid a large security presence, accompanied by his wife, Emine Erdogan, and one of their daughters, Sumeye Erdogan, who also voted at the same polling station. Some of Erdogan's supporters gathered outside the building to cheer him as he arrived. Up to 54 million people eligible to vote headed to the 175,000 polling stations across the country to decide whether the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) will achieve more seats than the 258 they obtained in the June elections. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's AKP had always won a majority in each election since 2002 before June, when they lost the majority they had always previously held. The general election is taking place in 85 electoral districts, electing 550 members to the Grand National Assembly.
