Two homeless people were seriously injured near Berlin's Schoneweide station on Sunday night, after their sleeping place was set ablaze in an attack by unknown assailants, footage from Monday shows.
According to the German media, at around 23:00 last night (21:00 GMT) unknown assailants poured a flammable liquid over two homeless men (aged 47 and 62) and their belongings before setting them alight.
It was reported that passers-by came to help the victims with a fire extinguisher from a neighboring snack place. The two men were treated at the site before being taken to a hospital. The motive for the attack is unclear, while detectives continue to investigate the incident site on Monday.
Attacks on homeless people are being perpetrated more and more often in Berlin. Last January, an unknown person attacked three homeless men, stabbing one of them in the leg at Yorckstrasse subway station in Berlin's Schoneberg district.
On May 2017, a group of teenagers severely beat a homeless person, who was sitting on a bench at Mehringdamm subway station in the Kreuzberg district. Another arson attack with fire happened on Christmas in 2016, when a group of youngsters tried to set ablaze a homeless man, who was sleeping at Schonleinstraße subway station in the Neukolln area.
