Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro paid his respects to Fidel Castro during a huge commemorative event on Havana's Revolution Square, Tuesday evening.
"It’s impressive, I was telling Raul, I was telling our 'Big Brother,' commander of the Army, president of the state’s council of ministers and president of the council of Cuba, our brother Raul Castro Ruz, I was telling him that there was no better way to say goodbye, Hasta siempre, to Fidel than at his square tonight," Maduro said.
The commemoration event began with the national anthem and a retrospective film of Castro's most famous speeches.
Fidel Castro passed away at the age of 90 in Havana on Friday, prompting emotional responses from both supporters and detractors worldwide. His ashes will be interred in the Santiago de Cuba at the Santa Ifigenia Cemetery on December 4.
Castro was a key member of the Cuban Revolution. He and his allies ousted the authoritarian government of Cuban President Fulgencio Batista in 1959, before going on to found a Cuban socialist state.
He served as prime minister from 1959 to 1976, and then as president from 1976 to 2008, in which time he survived geopolitical tensions and scores of US assassination attempts. In 2008 he handed the reins of power to his younger brother and slowly withdrew from the front-line of Cuban politics.
