Thousands of people took to the streets of Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank, Wednesday, for the funeral of Palestinian activist Mutaz Ibrahim Zawahreh. Mourners chanted slogans and carried posters of Zawahreh alongside flags in support of the PFLP (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine). The 27-year-old, from Duheisha refugee camp just south of Bethlehem, was killed while confronting Israeli state forces in the town on Tuesday. Zawahreh had previously been jailed for his political activity, as had his father and several siblings. Violence has escalated in recent week in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories, with ongoing protests, attacks, and reprisals stemming from tensions over the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in east Jerusalem, as well as the continued construction of illegal Jewish settlements in the West Bank. At least 30 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli soldiers since 1 October, and more than 1,700 injured, according to Palestinian medical sources. Seven Israelis were killed during the same period.
