A smuggler was caught red handed by Indonesian police when he attempted to traffic over 24 critically endangered yellow-crested cockatoos, crammed into plastic bottles, at the Port of Tanjung Perak in Surabaya, Tuesday. The birds were cut free by the police officers who then handed them over to a vet to receive medical attention. In 2007 the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources listed the yellow-crested cockatoo as critically endangered, with only an estimated 7,000 birds remaining. However they continue to be hunted for illegal trade, as smugglers can make up to €880 ($982) for each of these rare birds. Around 40% of the trafficked birds die during transport.
