Hundreds of women marched through Sao Paulo under the transnational 'SlutWalk' movement, Saturday, demanding the legalisation of abortion in the Latin American country. The demonstrators, some of them topless, condemned the abortion laws and marched with banners reading "Illegal abortion equals state femicide". Others in the crowd scrawled graffiti and stuck up posters. Abortion is only legal in Brazil in cases of rape, brain abnormalities or when the mother's life is in danger. There are many illegal abortion networks thought to be set up in the country, with women having to pay up to $3,100 (€2,842) for the procedure. Abortion is completely banned in all cases in Chile, El Salvador, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. According to the World Health Organisation, 95 per cent of abortions undertaken from 1995 to 2008 in Latin America are deemed unsafe.
