Thousands of protesters stormed Rio de Janeiro’s legislative assembly on Tuesday, protesting against proposed austerity measures by the State of Rio de Janeiro Governor Luiz Fernando Pezao.
An estimated 10,000 Rio public sector workers, both current and retired, demonstrated against the planned measures in front of assembly. After a peaceful start, the demonstration reportedly escalated when the protesters were denied a meeting with representatives of the State of Rio de Janeiro, after which they stormed the building.
Rio authorities say the proposed austerity measures would contain the state’s financial crisis, while the protesters claim it would result in wage and pension cuts, tax increases, suspension of social programs and service pay adjustment.
