Over 10,000 bottles of illegal vodka containing harmful levels of methanol have been destroyed by the customs officials at the waste disposal company, Remondis, in Bramsche, Lower Saxony, on Thursday.
"We've managed to protect potential consumers from a very dangerous product. Why is actually this product so dangerous? Here we have a very toxic beverage which contains 300 times more methanol than allowed," Bramsche customs spokesperson Christian Schuttenkopf told journalists.
According to local media, the contaminated beverage was produced in a plant in the German state of Thuringia and sold by a distribution company in Duisburg. Both companies have already been closed by the authorities. An investigation is underway.
