Police have detained the man who hijacked an EgyptAir Airbus A320 passenger plane, ending a hostage situation at Cyprus' Larnaca airport, Tuesday. Authorities have identified the man as Seif Eldin Mustafa.
Flight MS181 was hijacked during a domestic flight from Alexandria to Cairo and forced to land at Larnaca airport in Cyprus earlier on Tuesday. After landing in Cyprus, Mustafa released most of the passengers, keeping several foreign nationals and crew members on board the plane. Following negotiations with police, all hostages have reportedly been released and Mustafa is now in police custody.
Authorities are stating that the incident was a personal issue and was not politically motivated. During negotiations, Mustafa reportedly requested political asylum and to speak with his ex-wife and child, who resides in Cyprus.
Larnaca airport has been closed and all flights have been diverted while the operation continues.
