Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that he believed that alleged Russian foreign agent Maria Butina had been coerced through “unusual forms of torture” into pleading guilty to crimes she did not commit. He was speaking after the meeting of Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation in Baku on Friday.
On Thursday, Butina pleaded guilty to taking part in a conspiracy to violate US foreign agent laws.
“For many, many months, she has been subjected to unusual forms of torture. She sent out for exercise in the middle of the night, forcibly interrupting her sleep, placed in solitary confinement and many other [forms of torture],” he said.
“I have reason to believe that the purpose of these conditions, which were created for her, was to break her will and spirit so that she confesses to what she most likely did not commit,” he added.
The 29-year-old Russian graduate student entered the US in August 2016 on a student visa. She was arrested on July 15 for conspiring against the US government and failing to register as a foreign agent.
