Plumes of smoke rose above the Syrian-Turkish border, near the town of Kilis, Friday, after the Turkish military attacked Islamic State militant (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) positions. The cross-border took place on Thursday, after a Turkish army officer was killed and two soldiers injured by Islamic State militants firing on the town. Turkish media has reported that the Turkish army retaliated immediately by attacking an IS base on Syrian territory, reportedly killing one fighter. At least 30 people were killed and 100 injured in an explosion in the town of Suruc on Monday, near the Syrian border in southeastern Turkey. The attack targeted a gathering of the Socialist Youth Associations Federation (SGDF), who had gathered to organise humanitarian assistance to Kobane. Turkish officials blamed the attack on Islamic State militants.
