Chile: Violent arrests made as clashes erupt at Santiago teachers strike

Protesters clashed with riot police in Santiago, Wednesday, after students joined a teachers strike, resulting in violent escalations and several arrests. The strike was called by the College of Teachers to decry several recent decisions made by Chile's National Congress on education, and started off peacefully. Later a small group of young protesters covering their faces reportedly attempted to start altercations with police and block the streets. Surrounding protesters allegedly tried to stop the instigators. This is one among many protests in the past two months that has turned violent, with similar events unfolding at the Coordinated Assembly of Secondary Students (ACES) march on May 28.
