German government spokesperson Steffen Seibert condemned the recent airstrike in Idlib that left 33 Turkish soldiers dead and called for a truce in the region at a regular government press conference in Berlin on Friday.
"We see the latest military escalation in north-western Syria, especially in the region of Idlib, with very great concern and that we condemn the attack on Turkish positions," said Seibert.
Seibert added that the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, together with with French President Emanuel Macron and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was ready to resume talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin as a quartet.
"Now it is up to Russia to accept this offer for a dialogue. So far this has not been done yet. The offer stands," he added.
Seibert also commented on the spread of the coronavirus to Europe and Germany, saying the overall objective is to keep the spread at bay and slow it down. However, he remarked that the coronavirus crisis will not bypass the German economy "as closely integrated as it is within the global delivery chains."
German Health Ministry spokesperson Susanne Wackers provided on update on the outbreak within the country, saying that close to 60 people in Germany are infected with the virus, including those have been successfully treated.
