Tens of thousands of anti-government protesters took to the streets of London, Saturday, calling for an end to austerity and demanding the resignation of UK Prime Minister David Cameron.
The protest, organised by The People’s Assembly, kicked off at Trafalgar Square, with Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell speaking to the crowd, calling for a movement to bring down the Conservative government.
McDonnell said, "If we can work in solidarity together we don't have to wait until an election in 2020, we’ve got to work to bring this government down at the first opportunity."
Organised under the banner of “Health, Homes, Jobs, Education – End Austerity Now,” the mass demo comes as fractures have begun to grow within the Conservative Party. Cameron has faced particular opposition in recent weeks over his involvement and handling in the Panama Papers leaks, with a party split on the issue of Brexit, as well as the latest controversial National Health Service (NHS) and educational reforms leading to further anti-government protests and strikes.
