16. Students from the University of Witwatersrand, who started the wave of student protests eight days ago, marched through the streets of Johannesburg toward the headquarters of the ANC (Luthuli House) demanding to speak with the party's representatives, Thursday. Protesters held banners, chanted slogans and danced in their way to ANC's headquarters. Once they arrived, they were met by the Secretary General of the ANC, Gwede Mantashe, who received a list of demands from the students, although he was not allowed to address them from the stage. South African students are protesting against a proposed fee increase of 10 percent starting with the next academic year. On Friday they are expected to march to the Union Buildings, where they will meet with the President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, to discuss planned hikes in tuition fees that have triggered a week of protests nation-wide, some of them leading to clashes.
