Police made four arrests after anti-austerity protesters threw eggs and balls at delegates entering the Conservative Party conference in Manchester, Monday, while police sniper units observed protesters through their sniper sights and binoculars. Around 60,000 protesters took part in the demonstration with many throwing eggs and balls at the delegates and chanted "No ifs, no buts, no education cuts" and "Tory scum" under the watch of police sniper units deployed on the roof of the Manchester Central Convention Centre and Midland Hotel. Police officers were criticised for deploying sniper rifles onto the roof of the buildings with officers caught aiming through their rifle sights to observe protesters. Some police officers later claimed that their sniper rifles were only deployed as their telescopic sights were better at observing the crowds than regular binoculars. Greater Manchester Police have since confirmed that the sniper rifles are indeed intended to be used as lethal weapons if deemed necessary.
