Gay couples have begun applying for marriage licenses in Guam after it became the first US territory to recognize same-sex marriage. In April, Guam’s attorney general, Elizabeth Barrett-Anderson, directed the territory to begin processing same-sex marriage applications, but officials, backed by the governor, Eddie Calvo, refused. Calvo sued, and he was represented by an outside firm because the attorney general disagreed with his lawsuit.
