Members of the Muslim and Christian communities of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray gathered at the city's mosque, Friday, in memory of Father Jacques Hamel, who was murdered in Tuesday's church attack.
The imam of the mosque said of the loss of Hamel, that "A man has been killed, a man who devoted his life to others in the name of the God to which he belongs, in the name of the faith he endorsed. A man who distinguished himself by his qualities."
A former priest of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray also spoke at the event. He stated that "We will never let somebody divide us," and added that "we are together in this difficult moment and we can rely on each other in all the events that have passed and may pass again."
On Tuesday morning, a church was attacked in Saint-Etienne du Rouvray, Normandy, allegedly by Adel Kermiche and Abdel Malik Petitjean, who purportedly were from the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).
The attackers took five people people hostage, and one of them, Catholic priest Rev. Jacques Hamel, was stabbed to death by the assailants. They were subsequently shot dead by police as they tried to leave the church.
