Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed to establish “a safe-zone” in north-eastern Syria and conduct joint patrols in the area, speaking at a joint press conference after extensive talks in Sochi on Tuesday.
The two leaders signed a memorandum of understanding stating that Kurdish forces must withdraw from the area within 150 hours.
Turkey’s ‘Operation Peace Spring’ in north-eastern Syria will continue in a limited area, between the towns of Tell Abyad and Ras al-Ayn, some 32 kilometres (20 miles) inside Syrian territory, according to the agreement.
