The "combat operations by the Syrian army in eastern Aleppo have been suspended because the largest operation [yet] to evacuate civilians from eastern Aleppo is being carried out," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in Hamburg on Thursday.
Speaking to journalists about the results of the first working day of the 23rd OSCE Ministerial Council, Lavrov noted that he and US Secretary of State John Kerry had managed to reach an agreement to hold a meeting in Geneva between Russian and US military experts and diplomats on Saturday. The meeting had been scheduled in order to complete negotiations on the US proposals on Aleppo and Syria in general, which have been ongoing "sporadically" over the past few days, Lavrov said.
Russia's top diplomat also expressed hope that the perpetrators of the recent attack on a Russian mobile hospital in Aleppo will be brought to justice. The assault took place earlier this week and left two female paramedics dead and one pediatrician severely injured.
Commenting on a recent airstrike by the US-led coalition on militants in Iraq's Anbar province, which allegedly left dozens of civilians killed and injured, Lavrov stressed that Russia avoided "schadenfreude" around such events. "We are convinced that the fight against terrorism is not the right topic to score political points, but a very serious problem. I hope that our Western partners will realise soon the necessity to de-ideologise the fight against terrorism," he stressed.
