Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday led over 35,000 people in a 35-minute yoga session in New Delhi, Sunday, as India celebrates the first International Yoga Day. Modi was at the vanguard of the mass yoga session as participants, including officials, students, and India’s armed forces, took to their mats on the Rajpath ceremonial boulevard to perform stretches, meditative moves, and breathing exercises. He addressed the audience, thanking the UN and the 177 co-sponsoring countries for backing the event, as well as touting the beneficial qualities of the ancient art. Yoga Day will be practiced throughout India, as well as in 192 other countries following the Indian leader’s proposal to make the event official at the UN General Assembly in September 2014.
