Police used water cannon in a bid to break up protesters, arresting around 230 citizens according to local media, as thousands of activists marched through the streets of Yerevan, condemning the increase of electricity prices on Monday evening. As the demonstrators attempted to march through Marshal Baghramyan Avenue, they were blocked off by the police using water cannons, which then resulted in a sit-in protest. Police officers deployed water cannons in an effort to disperse the sit-in demonstration, but protesters remained seated. The figure for the number of arrests was reported by local media quoting the Armenian Public Relations and Information Department of the Police. The Regulatory Commission raised electricity prices by 16 percent last week and increased them for the third time within three years. Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian proposed to meet a small group of protesters, but the activists rejected the offer and took to the streets instead. If the price increase is not reviewed, protesters warned they will march on the president's residence.
