Several hundred workers form the United States Air Force's (USAF) Ramstein Air Base, near Kaiserslautern in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, staged a protest next to the military premises on Monday to demand higher wages. Protesters, most of them from the German Union Ver.di, waved flags and held banners demanding their goal of a 120 euro (136 US $) increase in the salary of each employee per month. The employer, however, has only approved a 1.3 per cent rise in wages. One of the speakers at the protest stated that the offer made by the employer "is just ridiculous." Similar protests occurred last week outside other foreign military bases also situated in Germany, according to union organisers. Ramstein Air Base serves as headquarters for the USAF in Europe, and it is also used by NATO forces. Most of the United States global Drone programme is coordinated and executed in the facility.
