At least 27 people were killed and more than 70 injured as a result of two separate blasts which hit the Baghdad Governorate on Thursday morning, local police reported.
The first blast was reported in a commercial district of eastern Baghdad where a car packed with explosives was blown up, reportedly killing at least 15 people and wounding over 35.
The second suicide car bomb targeted an Iraqi Army checkpoint in Taji, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of the capital. At least seven civilians and five soldiers were reportedly killed in that attack, and more than 20 wounded.
The attacks were claimed by IS and come after Iraqi government forces recently launched an operation to retake the IS-held city of Fallujah.
