16.04.2016
Pope Francis visited Moria refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos after meeting with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, Saturday morning. The pope’s visit to the island is aimed at showing the Catholic Church's solidarity with, and compassion for the refugees and migrants. The pope is due to accommodate several highly vulnerable refugees in the Vatican, sparing them from potential deportation under the EU-Turkey deal.
The approximately 3,652 refugees and migrants accommodated at Moria waited for the Head of the Roman Catholic Church, and chanted slogans such as "freedom" when he arrived, and held banners detailing their plight.
Accompanied by Bartholomew I of Constantinople and Ieronymos II of Athens, Pope Francis greeted hundreds of refugees and heard their stories. Afterwards the three religious leaders headed inside a tent where they are due to eat lunch together with 300 refugees.
The three will hold speeches in the camp and sign a joint declaration addressing the international community on the issue of the refugee crisis.
Strict security measures have been taken on the Greek island in readiness for the pontiff's visit. At least 500 additional police officers have been deployed from Athens, while riot police, special anti-explosive units and intelligence services have arrived to secure the area.
