Thousands of left-wing activists marched through the streets of Halle (Saale) on Saturday in protest against a rally by the right-wing group 'Identitarian movement'. Police were deployed in large numbers to separate the rival demonstrations.
The German government recently classified the far-right group as extremist. Its members held a rally near the building considered to be its headquarters in the city. Scuffles broke out occasionally between police and left-wing protesters who tried to prevent their opponents from staging a demonstration.
The rallies were organized on the 75th anniversary of a plot to kill Adolf Hitler, when a group of German officers led by Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg attempted to assassinate the Nazi leader.
