01.08.2015
A team of divers set out to explore the underwater wreckage of what's believed to be a World War I-era Russian submarine from Grisslehamn, Friday. The vessel is thought to have sunk off the coast of central Sweden in 1916. Alexei Mikhaylov, one of the divers leading the 'Ocean X' expedition, aims to find a sample of earth from the wreckage. Mikhaylov will then send the sample to a church in St. Petersburg's Sestroretsk district, where it will stand in a shrine to the victims of various "Russian and Soviet submarine" disasters, the diver said. The Swedish military has stated that the vessel was most likely a Russian Som-class submarine, which is believed to have sunk after a collision with a Swedish vessel in 1916 – killing all 18 crew members.
