Researchers discovered rippling bubbles of methane under the grass in Bely Island in the Kara Sea, Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District, Wednesday.
Alexandr Sokolov from the Ecological Research Station of the Institute of Plant and Animal Ecology discovered the anomaly during the research expedition. The phenomenon is caused by gas coming from underground. The scientists took measurements of the gas and found an excessive emission of methane and carbon dioxide. Researchers concluded that those patches are the results of global warming and abnormal heat that made the permafrost melt.
The regular expedition of the staff of the Ecological Research Station to Bely Island was devoted to the general monitoring of local ecosystems.
