Germany: Gauck meets Syria's Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem II to talk persecution of Christians

07.07.2016
German President Joachim Gauck received Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem II of the Syrian-Orthodox Church at Bellevue Palace in Berlin on Thursday to speak about the persecution of Christians in the Middle East.
The patriarch himself was the target of a suicide attack in the Syrian city of Qamishli in June, when a suicide bomber tried to enter a commemoration ceremony with Ignatius in attendance. He was stopped by security forces, but detonated his explosive device, killing five.
The Syrian-Othordox Church belongs to the so-called Oriental Orthodox Churches, which has two to three million people members, and happens to be one of the world's oldest churches. Around 100,000 of its believers live in Germany, which is why it seeks to be recognised as a public body.
