More than 300 people including the representatives of youth associations, patriotic student clubs and veterans came to honour the memory of millions who died in the Great Patriotic War on Sunday night in Moscow. The people gathered near Krymsky Bridge to light 1,418 candles on the bank of the River Moskva. The candle-lighting was part of the 'Candle of Memory' action, a series of events dedicated to the 74th anniversary of the start of the Great Patriotic War (World War II on the Eastern Front). At 03:00 in the morning local time a column of Muscovites started marching towards Alexander Garden for a memorial event. At 04:00 an announcement was made to mark the precise time 74 years ago that the Great Patriotic War began. At the end of the action the demonstrators laid flowers and lit candles near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
