The President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon expressed his concerns about the security situation in Afghanistan at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Sochi, Tuesday. Rahmon said that "the situation in Afghanistan is deteriorating day by day, there is fighting along more than sixty percent of the border [with Tajikistan]," adding that "we are very concerned, therefore I would like to discuss security issues in the region in detail." President Putin echoed his sentiment saying that "there is a need to discuss bilateral relations and the situation in the region, which we are certainly worried about." Violence in Afghanistan has increased in recent weeks with Afghan troops coming under attack as Taliban forces have claimed to capture the city of Kunduz, which lies just 62 km (almost 40 miles) from the Tajikistan border.
