Supporters of anti-Islam group BAERGIDA were met by hundreds of counter-protesters as both groups marched through Berlin on Germany's Unity Day, Saturday. Closely guarded by police, BAERGIDA supporters marched to Berlin Alexanderplatz carrying national flags. Meanwhile, after staging their own rally at Berlin's Hauptbahnhof station, dozens of counter protesters stood at the side of the BAERGIDA march booing the demonstration and waving pro-refugee flags . Police were deployed in large numbers in an attempt to prevent scuffles breaking out between the two groups of supporters. There are currently no reports of clashes and only one arrest. October 3 marks 25 years since the German Democratic Republic (DDR/East Germany) and the Federal Republic of Germany (BRD/West Germany) officially reunited as one country. A number of festivities will take place across the country over the weekend.
