The popular Ukrainian-American classical pianist Valentina Lisitsa rehearsed a concert dedicated to the Day of Memory and Sorrow in Donetsk, Monday. Lisitsa and the Donetsk Philharmonic Orchestra played Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 as well as Piano Sonato No. 7 by Prokofiev. The concert is set to be played late Monday evening when Lisitsa will appear on a stage in close proximity to the Donbass Liberators Memorial in Lenin Komsomol park. The commemorative day marks the beginning of Operation Barbarossa that saw Nazi forces invade the Soviet Union. The Ukrainian-born pianist has courted controversy over her vocal support for anti-Kiev forces operating in East Ukraine. Her performance at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra was cancelled in April.
