Chairman of the Socialist Party (PSRM) Igor Dodon is set to win the Moldovan presidential elections, according to the preliminary data announced by the Central Election Commission in a press conference in Chisinau, Sunday.
Dodon received 57.52 percent of the votes, according to their data at the time, while his opponent Maia Sandu received 42.48 percent of the vote.
At the press conference, Chairman of the Central Electoral Commission, Alina Russu, stressed that "the election process took place in conditions of total transparency," noting that "absolutely all concerned persons had access to information in real time, in accordance with the electronic data of the Electoral Commission."
Russu also reported that "more than 53 percent, or more than 1.6 million citizens of the Republic of Moldova, have cast their vote," adding that "17 [voting] sections overseas continue to work."
On October 30 the first round of the presidential elections were held where no single candidate managed to achieve an absolute majority. The preliminary results for the runoff election are to be announced on Monday morning.
The electing of a president will be the first time since 1996 that the country's head of state was not chosen by a sitting parliament.
