German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen invited her colleagues Ashton Carter from the USA, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert from the Netherlands and Ine Eriksen Soreide from Norway to meet and greet the members of NATO's 'Very High Readiness Task Force' [VJTF] in Muenster, Monday afternoon. NATO unity is crucial in securing European peace, according to Carter. The US official went on to discuss the problems Europe faces, including the Mediterranean migrant crisis and instability in North Africa and the Middle East. The VJTF's main quality is the speed in which it can be deployed in respect to erupting crises, with a full deployment of units possible within a two to seven day time period. The idea for this new specialised battalion was approved in September 2014 at the NATO Wales summit in order to counter perceived threats from Russia, Northern Africa and the Middle East.
