Federal Judge Orders Defiant Alabama Judges to Issue Marriage Licenses

A federal judge in Alabama has ordered the numerous counties refusing to grant marriage licenses after the recent Supreme Court ruling to fall in line with the letter of the law.
U.S. District Judge Callie Granade issued the brief order from Mobile, stating probate judges will not disobey marriage equality.
Since Alabama law states counties “may” issue marriage licenses, some probate judges have stopped handling marriage licenses.
However, the judges' order does not affect counties that have stopped issuing all marriage licenses in response to the court's decision.
