The Normandy Format talks finished in the Elysee Presidential Palace in Paris, Friday evening, with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko leaving Elysee Presidential Palace shortly after the other. The talks were held between Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande and Poroshenko. The meeting sought to re-inforce the principles of the Minsk Agreements and the ceasefire in the Ukrainian conflict. Putin emphasised that for peace to last in Ukraine, direct dialogue between the self-proclaimed republics in Donbass and the Ukrainian government must be forthcoming. The conflict in Syria was also discussed, after the Kremlin announced it conducted its first airstrikes in Syria on Wednesday, successfully hitting Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) targets.
