Monks of Russia's Valaam Monastery have been manufacturing Italian cheeses in Valaam Island, Tuesday, after sanctions and retaliatory measures which came into effect in August 2014 prevented Russians from importing the luxury dairy products from the EU. The Monks of Valaam underwent a 10-day practical and theoretical course on cooking Italian cheeses at the Russian Institute of Dairy Production in Moscow. Production equipment needed to make different kinds of cheese was also purchased from Sweden and Italy. Valaam is currently producing five kinds of Italian cheeses: mozzarella, morlacco, caciotta, smoked ricotta and bianca.
