Around 50 tourists set off from Moscow railway station on Friday to travel on a new luxury train named The Golden Eagle, bound for Iran's capital, Tehran.
The head of the Russian Railways Tour company Sergey Ilyaguyev said that the route was a "unique journey" through Central Asia, including stops in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan.
He added that the 18-day-trip, which costs over 1,000 euros per day, would be "making tour stops, crossing a lot of time zones, getting acquainted with various social customs of our country, various nationalities and lifestyles."
Ian Macbeth from York in Northern England said he expected to be "stopping almost every day" adding that on the first leg of the journey passengers would be "going for 36 hours continuously on the train."
The tour is run by Russia Railroads and is specially catered for rich travellers, offering them a five-star service, excursions, and fine cuisine. Its main selling point, however, is the chance it offers tourists to explore areas of Central Asia that still remain off the beaten track.
