East Jerusalem: Al-Aqsa plunged into darkness after Trump declaration

The Islamic Waqf ordered the lights illuminating East Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque to be switched off in response to US President Donald Trump’s recognition of the city as the capital of Israel on Wednesday.
The mosque was completely obscured behind the Western Wall following the order.
The site is considered the third holiest in Islam as scripture claims the Prophet Muhammad was transported there from Mecca during the Isra.
Trump recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on Wednesday in a televised address from Washington DC and started the process of moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv.
The decision caused immediate outrage and fury from Palestinians.
Israel has always claimed Jerusalem as its capital while Palestinians demand that annexed East Jerusalem becomes the capital of a future Palestinian state.
