Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke on Monday during the meeting of the State Council Presidium on the development of the fishing and fisheries industry at his residence in Novo-Ogaryovo, outside Moscow. Putin said that the meeting was aimed at determine what measures should be taken to "fill the Russian market with affordable domestic fish of a high quality." At this moment, although “three-quarters of domestic marine fisheries are based on Russian bio-resources” he noted that the current situation means that the Russian market "is still dominated by imported and quite expensive fish and not always of good quality." The Russian leader also pointed out that, in his opinion, it is absolutely unsatisfactory when “the range and the fish price at the domestic market are determined by foreign suppliers and retailers.” The Russian fishing industry has an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of 7.6 million square kilometres (2.93 million square miles), including access to twelve seas in three oceans, together with the landlocked Caspian Sea and more than two million rivers. The coastline of the Russian Federation is the fourth longest in the world after the coastlines of Canada, Greenland, and Indonesia.
