SOT, Jorge Quispe, public transport user (Spanish): They do not respect the protection guideline, they are picking up, for example, here at the checkpoint they are fine, but they arrive further on the route and are already getting too crowded. That's what I perceive in all public transport buses."

SOT, Jorge Quispe, public transport user (Spanish): "It's more infectious, I would say, than the markets because everyone gets on those buses. All people, whether they are older, younger, whatever. Every person gets on those buses."

Following the easing of restrictions and the resumption of economic activities in Peru, the government has warned that urban transport in Lima may become a focus for coronavirus infection, after rapid COVID-19 tests were carried out at bus stations in the capital.
Footage filmed on Thursday shows crowds at one of Lima's urban transport stops, with passengers wearing masks but not maintaining the physical distance stipulated to avoid transmission of the virus.
After detecting the markets as major outbreaks of coronavirus infection in Peru, the government of Martin Vizcarra began carrying out rapid tests on urban transport users at bus stops and service stations. Of a total of 597 tests taken on Wednesday, 213 users tested positive, according to data from the Ministry of Transport.
"They do not respect the protection guidelines, they are picking up, for example. Here at the checkpoint they are fine, but they arrive further on the route and are already getting too crowded," said one urban transport user.
Authorities are urging both passengers and drivers to follow safety protocols, wear masks at all times and maintain physical distance between people to avoid virus spread.
According to data collected by Johns Hopkinks University, Peru has recorded 141,779 cases of coronavirus and 4,099 related deaths.
